The Yaks

Yak Foundation and Happy New Year

December 31, 2006 · 5 Comments

Well, I must admit that I have been lax in my viewing and posting on “THE YAKS” and I am ashamed. But here I sit on December 31st. reflecting on the year and faced with my annual Dec. 31st question.

How does one make a contribution to the Yak Foundation before the tax year ends? Is there an on-line path? I will continue searching my computer (mildly organized) and my brain (more and more, less organized) for ways, but if there is a way and a Yak knows, please contact me ASAYP (as soon as Yakking possible).

UPDATE – Talked with MJ on the phone and solved that problem. Also heard lots of Yak updates. I’ll let everyone post here though
I enjoyed the pictures up on the blog and wonder when “the Yak” went to the Ritz? I will promise to post something soon (yes I have finally bookmarked the site on the computer I use most).

In the “wow I am getting old” category (note: that means you all are getting old as well…) Joshua is off to a New Year’s Eve party tonight and is looking forward to kissing his GIRLFRIEND at midnight. We will see if it is a peck on the cheek or something more substantial. Kirsten and I were just commenting on the fact that Joshua will tell us. We are pleased with the open relationship we have with him. Fits in with my conversation with MJ on the fact that “Parent” is not only a noun, but a verb.

Our New Year’s resolution is to spend more time Yakking and more time with the Yaks in the coming year. Let’s make, at a minimum, quarterly plans if not monthly plans. In the coming year. Our best for all in the New Year.

PS – LilyJohn – enjoy the parade

Happy New Year Ron! The Yak was at the Ritz as our guest. The Yak is currently enjoying a northern migration in Sonoma County.

PS – We were at the Ritz in over Oxy homecoming weekend, and enjoyed two excellent evenings at Casa Juan during which the Yakchange Program was initiated.

OK, so I do know. Thanks to MJ for the amazingly cool website.

Talked to Proyak on the phone the other day heard the whole Talbert story. Says they’re hooking up for drinks sometime in the near future. And, he mentioned posting something on the Yak Blog. I had to admit that I’d completely forgotten that MJ had set this up. I thought it was the end of the year and that could be my excuse. But, my email trail says it was closer to the end of October when this was all good to go.

Still, the end of the year was a busy time in the Biscuit life. I’ve done some poking around the job market this year since I’m up for tenure. Don’t really want to spend a year at SCU after they’ve said they don’t want me around…

I interviewed at 2 schools. The American University interview was around the time the Yak blog was getting going. I wasn’t very impressed by anything, to tell the truth. The students were probably comparable, but on almost every other measure (except maybe the building) SCU came up far superior. I came back from the interview thankful for all I had at SCU, most especially my colleagues.

I had also applied to the University of New Mexico. I was very close to calling them to tell them to trash my app, but my colleague Terri reminded me of the old adage about keeping your options open. Shortly thereafter I received a campus visit as one of the finalists for the job.

The interview went stupendously. I liked the school, the colleagues, the area, everything. And, it wouldn’t mean leaving Mexican behind (a major bummer about living on the East Coast). Plus I’d only be an hour ahead of all the Yaks but an hour closer to all my colleagues in the Eastern Time Zone. I’m waiting for an actual offer letter from the school, should have it imminently. But, I know the rough outline of the offer. It’s going to mean a pay cut, but on every other dimension it’ll mean a step in the quality of life. Except being further from Los Yaks. Provost also mentioned the possibility of the Johns relocating the Bay Area. Irony is so damn ironical sometimes…

But, it’s less teaching. It’s semesters instead of quarters (quarters always seem like they’re just starting or just ending), a chance to give up teaching Strategy once and for all for bus, gov, and society sorts of classes. And, a couple of colleges who straight in the middle of Social Issues in Management scholarship instead of some Business Ethicists who are mostly a separate beast (even though there is significant overlap). I’m getting tired of being introduced as an Ethicist and having to explain that I’m not really. So, that’d be nice to leave behind. Plus, the name of the AAA team in Albuquerque? The Isotopes. And, yes, the name was inspired by the name of the baseball team in that mythical place name Springfield where Homer lives. The fans got to vote on the name of the team after the Dukes left at the turn of the century. It’s minor, but meaningful to me to have a home team with a connection to The Simpsons… Of course, the name Isotopes isn’t wholly inappropriate which makes it even better.

We’re still in negotiation so I can say it’s a done deal, but I’d say there’s a 95 % chance Homer and I will be living in Albuquerque come August.

Okay, that’s my big news. Thanks again to MJ for setting this up. the web page is great.

    Later,
    Bisc
