Oxy Hoops in the SF Chronicle

January 11, 2007 · Leave a Comment

FROM THE JAN. 11 CHRON:

But the big news on Caltech’s Pasadena campus came Saturday: Caltech won a basketball game. It may seem that Caltech, a nonscholarship Division III program, last won a game 540 million years ago when single-celled forms ruled the earth, but it was really a little more than two years ago, when the Beavers topped Life Pacific back in November 2004.

Saturday’s 81-52 victory over Bard College ended that 59-game losing streak, but perhaps more significant, it halted Caltech’s 207-game losing streak to NCAA Division III opponents, a streak that began after the Beavers’ 1996 victory over Principia.

Caltech still has a 22-year, 246-game conference (SCIAC) losing streak after Wednesday night’s 103-40 loss to Occidental, so there are still some mountains to climb.

HAPPY TO SEE THE UNIVERSAL CONSTANT OF OXY CRUSHING CALTECH IS STILL IN PLAY.

Bizarre Phone Call

January 5, 2007 · 4 Comments

Just an odd note of yesterday’s events – received a call from a co-worker to ask me if an acquaintence of mine was an Axe murderer… she had met him in a local bar in Monterey and they had a dinner date scheduled…

I let her know I didn’t think Lee would murder her, but I did note it odd that Lee was here in Monterey and had not contacted me (his mom lives here)… actually that is not odd… that’s Lee.

When I hear details I will happily pass them on to all that are interested.

Yak Foundation and Happy New Year

December 31, 2006 · 5 Comments

Well, I must admit that I have been lax in my viewing and posting on “THE YAKS” and I am ashamed. But here I sit on December 31st. reflecting on the year and faced with my annual Dec. 31st question.

How does one make a contribution to the Yak Foundation before the tax year ends? Is there an on-line path? I will continue searching my computer (mildly organized) and my brain (more and more, less organized) for ways, but if there is a way and a Yak knows, please contact me ASAYP (as soon as Yakking possible).

UPDATE – Talked with MJ on the phone and solved that problem. Also heard lots of Yak updates. I’ll let everyone post here though
I enjoyed the pictures up on the blog and wonder when “the Yak” went to the Ritz? I will promise to post something soon (yes I have finally bookmarked the site on the computer I use most).

In the “wow I am getting old” category (note: that means you all are getting old as well…) Joshua is off to a New Year’s Eve party tonight and is looking forward to kissing his GIRLFRIEND at midnight. We will see if it is a peck on the cheek or something more substantial. Kirsten and I were just commenting on the fact that Joshua will tell us. We are pleased with the open relationship we have with him. Fits in with my conversation with MJ on the fact that “Parent” is not only a noun, but a verb.

Our New Year’s resolution is to spend more time Yakking and more time with the Yaks in the coming year. Let’s make, at a minimum, quarterly plans if not monthly plans. In the coming year. Our best for all in the New Year.

PS – LilyJohn – enjoy the parade

The Final Boss

December 21, 2006 · 1 Comment

Two months of tireless effort and I managed to defeat the Final Boss in Daxter.   Some of the games levels were fiendishly difficult.  Plus the people who ride the bus with me must think I have a bizarre form of Tourette’s Syndrome.  “Frickin’ bugs!”

Daxter go the girl, but I seem to has only completed 70% of the game according to my saved triumph.   What gives GameMaster Mike?

The event is the ‘Rosebud Parade’, an annual Pasadena tradition. Six blocks of concentrated cute – couple hundred kids on decorated bicycles.

I’ve set up an account on ‘flickr’ which allows automatic posting of photos to this blog. It looks superior to doing it with the blog software.

login info for flickr is being sent to everybody via email :)

TGIF

October 27, 2006 · 1 Comment

Thanks to Mike, Maiken and Lily for extending the outstanding hospitality of Casa Juan to the hungry Canavans last weekend!  You know Connor was impressed when, after a 10-hour day at Disneyland, he woke up Monday and excitedly told us ‘I am going to tell Ms. Joyce about the Lamborgini car!  I will use it for sharing.  My clues will be “It is loud.  It is fast.  It is black.”  Thanks for the ride Mike that sure beat the hell out of Mr. Toad and the Teacups.

Oh yeah, my left thumb hurts, and I am not sure I will ever master the Daxter dream sequences.  After 2+ hours my best effort was 21/40 in the first round.
